Background information
On November 1st 2022, the Swedish Migration Agency introduced new procedures for stricter ID and passports controls in connection with applications for residence permits. Since November 1st, all applicants of a residence permit are required to visit the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC in-person, before the Swedish Migration Agency can grant a decision on the application.

To make ID and passport controls more accessible for student and work permit applicants of American and Canadian citizenship, or other visa exempt citizen, Swedish authorities have decided to provide POP-UP ID and passport controls in four American cities and one Canadian city in mid-July 2023.
