The Government has decided that a vaccination certificate is to be the main requirement for entry into Sweden as of 21 January.
The Government has decided to return to the entry restrictions that applied before 28 December 2021, meaning that the requirement to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours prior to entry will be removed as of 21 January. The list of countries with approved vaccination certificates (‘approved countries’) will also be expanded. This has been decided following a request from the Public Health Agency of Sweden.
As of 21 January, people travelling to Sweden from countries in the EU/EEA, including the Nordic countries, must be able to present the EU Di-gital COVID Certificate or an equivalent certificate showing that they have either been vaccinated against COVID-19, tested negative within 72 hours prior to arrival or recovered from COVID-19 within the past 6 months. This requirement applies to foreign nationals who are 18 or older. The same exemptions from the certificate requirement will apply as previously – for example, people travelling via Sweden between Bornholm and another part of Denmark will still be exempt from the certificate requirement.
Foreign nationals travelling to Sweden from a country outside the EU/EEA must still be covered by one of the exemptions from the entry ban and also be able to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to entry into Sweden, or be exempt from the test requirement, to be able to enter the country. There are exemptions from the entry ban and the test requirement, such as for travellers with vaccination certificates issued in certain countries. As of 21 January, travellers holding vaccination certificates issued in Montenegro, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay will be exempt from the entry ban and the test requirement. Vaccination certificates issued in approved countries are considered equivalent to the EU Digital COVID Certificate, meaning that they can be checked and verified in the same way and using the same technical systems as for the EU Digital CO-VID Certificate. The list of ‘exempted countries’ (countries exempted from the entry ban) remains unchanged, and the test requirement still applies to residents of these countries, but the time will be extended to a maximum of 72 hours prior to entry.
