Last week, the Embassy had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Åke Åkesson, Head of Borgholm Health center to Singapore.

Dr. Åkesson has received a lot of attention for establishing the “Borgholm Model” which is a reform model of primary care. The model, named after the municipality on the island on which Dr. Åkesson has his practice, is about bringing health care closer to the people, reducing the usage of emergency care at the hospital and instead increase the role of primary care doctors that provide health care at home. The model also provides for a more efficient and interactive care, as patients, through the “home hospital”, can take active part in their own care by monitoring themselves at home.

During his visit, Dr. Åkesson met with policy makers and health professionals from the National Healthcare Group (NHG), SingHealth, National University of Health System (NUHS) and the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) to share experiences and discuss how to prepare our health care systems for a rapidly aging population and how to ensure that our elderly age with dignity and can maintain a high quality of life as long as possible.

Thank you Dr. Åkesson for an incredibly interesting and inspiring visit!
