To make ID and passport control more accessible for student and work permit applicants of visa-exempt citizens residing in Hong Kong and Macau, the Swedish Migration Agency has exceptionally decided to conduct a mobile ID and passport control in Hong Kong on 16-17 December 2024. The ID and passport checks will be conducted by authorised staff from the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok.
Background
The Swedish Migration Agency introduced new procedures for stricter ID and passports controls in connection with applications for residence permits on November 1, 2022. Since then, all applicants of a residence permit are required to visit a Swedish mission handling migration matters in-person. This is needed before the Swedish Migration Agency can grant a decision on the application. Residents in Hong Kong are normally referred to the Swedish missions in Shanghai or Beijing.
Eligibility
The ID and passport control pop-up is only applicable to visa-exempt nationalities residing in Hong Kong or Macao who have already applied for a residence permit for the purpose of studying or working in Sweden.
Applicants of other nationalities and applicants of all other types of residence permits (such as family ties) are not eligible for this Pop-up. They must visit the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing or the Consulate General in Shanghai to submit their biometrics and have an interview conducted before entering Sweden.
