51st session of the Human Rights Council -Item 3 General debate

Delivered by: H.E. Ms Anna Jardfelt, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN in Geneva

Mr President,

Today, there are multiple threats against our security, freedom and our future:

The devastating impacts of wars and armed conflicts; the weakened respect for human rights and democratic principles worldwide – accentuated by the pandemic – and a climate crisis, with more tropical storms, floods, wildfires, and droughts.

Great pressure is put on our societies. More than ever before, the world needs joint and coordinated action. Sweden is a strong political and financial supporter to the multilateral system and we reiterate our full support for the rules-based international order.

Scientific evidence shows that democracy is the best foundation for a sustainable society – and that democracies do not go to war against each other. But democracy can never be taken for granted. It must be protected and nurtured every day. We must ensure that everyone can enjoy their human rights; civil and political rights as well as social, economic, and cultural rights, since they are mutually dependent and reinforcing. A vibrant civil society is vital for democracy, including every brave human rights defender.

Sweden is deeply committed to protecting and promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law – all around the world.

Thank you.
