Statement by Sweden in the General Debate on Item 2 (Annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and reports of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Secretary-General)

01 mar 2021

46th session of the Human Rights Council. Statement delivered by Ambassador Anna Jardfelt.

Madam President,

High Commissioner,

To establish a counter narrative to the democratic backsliding and weakening respect for human rights, Sweden pursues the “Drive for Democracy”, stepping up efforts to promote and protect democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Alongside our Feminist Foreign Policy, it guides our efforts.

Sweden stands up for sexual and reproductive health and rights for all, and for preventing and eliminating sexual and gender-based violence. Our push for LGBTIQ persons’ full enjoyment of human rights continues unabated.

The silencing, arbitrary arrests, intimidation, harassement and even killings of human rights defenders, journalists, trade union representatives and peaceful protesters worldwide including in Iraq and the Philippines is deeply concerning. Peaceful protesters and political opposition candidates face repression protests in Hong Kong.

We urge Tanzania and Cuba to safeguard democratic space, including for civil society, dissidents and political opponents, and ensure the right to freedom of expression and opinion.

Human Rights violations in Yemen remain deeply concerning. Women and girls face particular vulnerability. All parties must protect civilians and respect international law. Alleged human rights violations and abuses in Tigray and elsewhere in Ethiopia must be fully investigated and perpetrators held accountable.

Accountability for human rights violations must be ensured wherever they occur. We reiterate our strong support for the OHCHR and its regional offices, including in Guatemala. We stand by the UN Secretary-General in his Call to Action for Human Rights.

I thank you.
