Statement by Sweden, Item 10, General Debate

22 mar 2021

46th session of the Human Rights Council. Statement delivered by Ambassador Anna Jardfelt.

Mme. President,

Sweden highly values the work of the OHCHR in providing technical assistance and capacity building. The current global situation demonstrates the necessity of international cooperation and solidarity, and we call upon all States to fully cooperate with the Office.

The global trend of democratic backsliding is further compounded by the pandemic, which risks having serious and far-reaching repercussions on the enjoyment of human rights. The OHCHR plays a key role in monitoring the situation and providing clear policy guidance to States for a human rights-based response to the pandemic. The contributions of the OHCHR’s field presences is of utmost importance and deserves to be highlighted.

The OHCHR’s active cooperation and dialogue with States, regional organizations and other stakeholders is indispensable in promoting the respect, protection, and fulfilment of human rights around the world.

To ensure OHCHR’s capacity and ability in these challenging times, adequate and consistent funding is of the essence. In a response to this and as a testament of the longstanding priority of human rights and democracy, Sweden increased its core support to the OHCHR in 2020 and encourage other States to fulfil their financial commitments without delay.

Thank you.
