52nd session of the Human Rights Council - Item 2 - General debate

National statement Delivered by: H.E. Ms Anna Jardfelt, Ambassador, Permanent representative of Sweden to the UN in Geneva

Thank you, Mr Vice-President,

Sweden aligns itself with the EU.

Regrettably, the trend of shrinking democratic space continues. In too many countries defending democracy and human rights comes with high and unacceptable risks.

The recent revocation of citizenships of recently deported Nicaraguan citizens is deeply worrisome and the disproportionate sentences after the July 11 protests in Cuba are of great concern.

Regarding Vietnam we note with deep concern the shrinking space for civil society, and reiterate our call for freedom of expression, opinion and assembly without fear of reprisals. Continued restrictions on civil and political right in Thailand are concerning, not least in view of upcoming elections.

We urge Mali to ensure a swift return to constitutional order through democratic elections as well as accountability for violations of human rights. The transition government is responsible for actions by the so-called Wagner group on its behalf.

We call on Sudan to urgently return to a civilian-led democratic transition. We reiterate our serious concerns, including regarding sexual and gender-based violence, and call for accountability for the victims.

We recall the importance of upholding freedom of expression, assembly and association in Egypt. Restrictions on civil society and human rights defenders are concerning.

The human rights situation in Yemen remains deeply concerning. We reiterate the importance of the protection of civilians. Restrictions on women and girls in northern Yemen, and their effects on humanitarian access and women-to-women aid services are worrisome.

We reiterate our call on the Lebanese government to ensure an independent and credible investigation of the explosion in Beirut 2020, to ensure accountability and justice.

I thank you.
