51st session of the Human Rights Council -Item 2 General debate

Delivered by: H.E. Ms Anna Jardfelt, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN in Geneva

Mr President,

Sweden aligns itself with the EU.

Warmest congratulations to Mr. Türk on his appointment. Sweden is a steadfast supporter of the OHCHR and its independence.

Our determination to protect democracy, human rights and the rule of law is unwavering. We will continue to demand accountability for human rights violations and abuses wherever they occur.

The EU has welcomed the release of the OHCHR report on Xinjiang, reinforcing concerns about serious human rights violations. We call on China to implement the recommendations without delay.

Civil society’s shrinking space in Vietnam and Cuba is of deep concern. We reiterate our call for freedom of expression, opinion and assembly for all including human rights defenders and journalists without fear of reprisals. Restrictions on civil and political rights in Thailand are concerning.

The human rights situation in Mali remains alarming. The transition government must ensure accountability for violations and abuses and return to constitutional order through democratic elections. Mali is also responsible for actions by the so-called Wagner group on its behalf.

We call on Sudan to return to a civilian-led democratic transition through an inclusive dialogue. We reiterate our serious concerns regarding the human rights situation, including sexual and gender-based violence and attacks against peaceful protesters.

The continued arbitrary ousting and harassment of independent judges and prosecutors in Guatemala is a matter of concern and serves to undermine the rule of law in the country.

We reiterate our call on the Lebanese government to ensure an independent and credible investigation of the explosion in Beirut more than two years ago. The lack of accountability and justice for victims is unacceptable.

I thank you.
