25 years ago, the first International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held in Cairo, with the aim to accelerate action to empower women and girls. On Friday the 21th of June, UNFPA invited representatives in the field to share their experiences from the past 25 years and reflect upon the remaining gaps.
Luisa Fumo, representing the Embassy of Sweden, participated in the panel discussion organized by UNFPA to mark the 25th year of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
During a panel discussion, participants talked about the access to information on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), positive impacts in the last 25 years and challenges. Luisa Fumo emphasized the importance of access to technology and how it facilitates the mainstreaming and the availability of information on SRHR to the youth.
A new mobile application, DIKA, on access to information and services on sexual and reproductive health and rights for adolescent and young people was launched during the event. The application was developed by Mozambican young innovators who have received awards for its innovative way of reaching the youth in the country.
In her finishing speech, the UNFPA Representative in Mozambique, Andrea Wojnar summarized all the important factors that has contributed to the successful development of SRHR in the country; the innovation, the technology, the entrepreneurship and the cooperation between partners. She also underlined how young people are always in the center of the work, and how important it is to correct the misinformation about SRHR services for better decision-making about their own future.
The ICPD25 Celebrations will be held in Nairobi between the 12 - 14 of November later this year.
