First screening of the Hip-Hop Documentary at the Swedish Residence

On the 1st of March 2024, the Embassy of Sweden, in collaboration with Ku-Atenga Media, Time Machine and Zambian Hip-Hop artists, screened the long-awaited documentary on the evolution of Zambian Hip Hop for the first time. The 45 minutes long documentary was showed at the Swedish residence in front of an audience of artists and producers, cultural profiles, and Hip-Hop fans.

The documentary highlights the 50 years celebration of Hip Hop in Zambia which was commemorated with a concert on the 2nd of December 2023 at the Music Club in at East Park Mall in Lusaka. The celebration witnessed the coming together of Swedish and Zambian musicians to narrate the impactful story of Hip Hop and its profound influence on the Zambian culture.

This extraordinary event featured a collaborative creative cultural exchange and showcase performances by the prolific and Grammy award-winning Swedish HipHop artist, Jason 'Timbuktu' Diakité together with Esther and the Masaka Trio, and a line-up of esteemed Zambian Hip-Hop artists, such as Macky2, Slap Dee, Shimasta, Jay Rox, Cleo Ice Queen, Natasha Chansa, Killa, and Legend’son who shared their perspectives on the evolution of Hip-Hop in Zambia.

The film screening was followed by a short panel discussion led by Magnus Mando, between representatives from the Swedish Embassy, Ku-Atenga Media and the Ministry of Youth, Arts and Sport as well as the artist Shimasta and Time Machine founder Duncan Sodala. They discussed the processes behind both the concert and the documentary, as well as the importance of celebrating cultural exchanges and the pivotal role of the Ministry of Youth, Arts and Sport in the Zambian music industry.
