In August, 2006 the Embassy returned to the banks of the Potomac River when the new Embassy building House of Sweden opened its doors on the Georgetown waterfront as the flagship of Sweden's public diplomacy in the United States.
The Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. is one of Sweden's largest missions in the world and serves as the official link between Sweden and the United States. Ambassador Urban Ahlin (Bio), took up his post as Head of Mission on August 15, 2023. Approximately 55 people work at the Embassy. In addition to the Embassy there are approximately 25 Swedish Consulates throughout the U.S. The Embassy covers a range of policy issues, including security, defense, climate and sustainability, trade, democracy, human rights, gender equality, and culture. The Embassy also provides Swedish-citizen and migration services.
The Embassy is closed for visitors and phone calls on weekends and official holidays (see link to opening hours below). In case of an emergency involving a Swedish citizen, please call the Embassy at +1 (202) 467-2600 and follow the instructions.

Sweden has diplomatic relations with almost all States in the world. It has embassies and consulates in around half of these. Sweden's foreign representation consists of approximately 100 missions abroad and 350 honorary consulates.
