UPR 39th session - Statement by Sweden in the review of Hungary

02 Nov 2021

Delivered by: H.E. Ms Anna Jardfelt, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN in Geneva

President,

Sweden welcomes the efforts made by Hungary to address some of the recommendations presented in the previous reporting cycle, including the adoption of a police and persecution protocol on hate crimes. However, causes for concern remain and include – among others – the situation for asylum seekers and for the media, especially in relation to the upcoming election campaign, as well as the judiciary’s decreasing independence.

Sweden would therefore like to make the following recommendations:

  1. Ensure the right to seek asylum and comply with related judgments and decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
  2. Ensure a level playing field for media by enabling editorial pluralism through independent media outlets, including the public broadcaster, and an independent media regulator.
  3. Safeguard and guarantee full and effective independence of the judiciary, including when it comes to the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court.

Thank you
