Madam President,
Sweden fully aligns itself with the statement of the European Union.
We thank the High Commissioner for the update. Sweden strongly supports the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission. We note with concern the COVID-19 pandemic's detrimental effects on health and the enjoyment of human rights, with women and girls disproportionally affected by the pandemic.
We remain deeply concerned about the human rights situation stemming from the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine and in the illegally annexed Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. The situation is gravely affecting the rights of millions of civilians.
The position of Sweden and the EU is clear and well-known: We strongly condemn the Russian Federation's ongoing violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We reiterate our non-recognition and condemnation of Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, and our condemnation of Russia's aggression in eastern Ukraine. We call on Russia, as well as other parties, to uphold its obligations under international law.
