Statement by Sweden. Delivered by: Mr. Fredrik Nivaeus, Minister counselor, Permanent Mission of Sweden in Geneva
Mr President,
Sweden fully supports the work of the Fact-Finding Mission and thanks the Mission for the oral update.
The serious human rights and humanitarian situation in Venezuela is greatly concerning. We urge the authorities to immediately and unconditionally end the systematic human rights violations and abuses.
The criminalization of the work of political opponents, human rights defenders, journalists and other media workers, union leaders and other individuals that document or denounce such violations or are perceived to interfere with government interests, must immediately cease.
Perpetrators of human rights violations continue to benefit from systemic impunity. The work of the International Criminal Court on Venezuela is crucial to ensure accountability.
We support the parties’ return to the political negotiations in good faith, as a step towards the reinstitution of democracy, rule of law and human rights in Venezuela.
Madame Valiñas, Mr. Cox Vial, Madame Tappatá Valdez,
Which other measures can the international community take to promote the right to a fair trial, includingthe independence of the judiciary, and the release of political prisoners in Venezuela?
I thank you.
