26 Sep 2019

Swedish statement delivered at UN Human Rights Council, 42nd Session.

Mr. President,

Sweden fully aligns itself with the EU.

Sweden values the work of the OHCHR in providing technical assistance and capacity building. We reiterate our call upon all States to fully cooperate with the Office.

While welcoming Cambodia’s cooperation with the Special Rapporteur and the Independent Expert on SOGI, Sweden calls for further efforts regarding political participation, the freedoms of expression, opinion, association and assembly and urges Cambodia to reopen democratic space, including for civil society, human rights defenders and media.

Sweden strongly supports the efforts of the National Commission of Inquiry in Yemen to implement its mandate as well as the efforts of the Group of Eminent International and Regional Experts. We welcome the  technical assistance and capacity-building provided by the OHCHR to the National Commission and call upon all parties to implement the recommendations in the report.

We reaffirm our full support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Free, fair and transparent elections, an independent judiciary and gender equality are key to continued democratic development. While commending Georgia’s efforts, we encourage further reforms in these areas, as well as ensuring the full enjoyment of all human rights for LGBTI persons in Georgia, including freedom of assembly.

I thank you.
