On February 26th Sweden hosted a presentation by Adj. Prof. Eskil Ullberg GMU and IMIT of the Trade in Ideas Program at the WTO. The initiative on Trade in Ideas was first presented at WTO in June 2017 as part of the WTO Trade Dialogue Series.
The idea behind Trade in Ideas is that developing countries have advanced tremendously in human capital formation the last 20 years. But that, in many countries, the mechanisms to turn knowledge into economic gain is lacking.
The Swedish Government funded a pilot study on trade in ideas, started in July 2017. This study assesses the North-South trade potential of technological ideas based on patents.
