Press statement about the Global Climate Strike and Bugoma Forest

17 Sep 2020

The Embassies of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland) in Uganda have decided to support the Fridays4Future movement in Uganda in its effort to draw attention to the effects of global climate change and continued environmental degradation, including the planned sugarcane plantation in Bugoma Forest.

Getting Uganda's young citizens involved in forest conservation has a major potential in mobilizing support for preservation of forests, reforestation, and slowing down deforestation and natural resource degradation. Uganda has faced massive deforestation that has left the country with only 8% of its original forest cover. Research projects shows that Uganda may not have forests by 2040 if this rate of deforestation continues.

As crucial stakeholders in the sustainability debate, young people are providing an invaluable perspective that policymakers sometimes lack. Global youth deserve a say in environmental politics, and this starts with raising awareness among young people about the key issues at hand and how to get involved in developing and implementing sustainable solutions. The upcoming World Clean-Up Day (19 Sep) and Global Day of Climate Action (25 Sep) are important events in this regard.

Youth-led organisations across the globe have decided to put their energy, voices and recourses together to build a sustained youth-led campaign to save Bugoma forest.

The Embassies of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland have decided to support this global youth-led campaign.
