JOB OPPORTUNITY - Consular officer

The Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok is seeking applicants to fill the following position:

Position Title: Consular officer
Conditions: Fulltime, permanent employment subject to probation period of 6 months.

1. Background:
The Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok represents Sweden in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. The Embassy represents and promotes Swedish interests in political and economic relations, development cooperation, trade and investment promotion and cultural matters. It provides consular services to Swedish nationals and migration services to non-nationals.

The Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok operates an extensive consular mission offering consular assistance to Swedes in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Taiwan.

2. Line of reporting and organisational belonging:
The consular officer is part of the Section for Consular Affairs and reports to the Head of Section who in turn reports to the Head of Mission (Ambassador).

3. Tasks and responsibilities:
The area of responsibility covers assistance to Swedish citizens in consular and civil legal matters, including serious injury, illness or death, arrest, and detention. The consular officer provides information and pro-active advice to help Swedes help themselves and allowing them to avoid difficulties and problems when travelling to Thailand and/or the other countries covered by the Embassy, as listed above.

  • Provide consular assistance within the Swedish consular assistance framework;
  • Process a variety of administrative consular matters: certifications, registrations related to Swedish public register, marriages, and more;
  • Provide information to the public by telephone, e-mail and/or in person;
  • Initiate and maintain contact with all levels of Thai authorities and social services; and
  • Maintain a close cooperation with consular staff at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, other Embassies and the Swedish honorary consulates.

The work environment is dynamic and from time to time characterized by high pace and multitasking. Flexibility and ability to quickly adjust to change and new directives is essential. A weekend/holiday duty on rotational basis is applied and outside office hours may occur

4. Essential qualifications, skills, and experiences:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in relevant field;
  • Minimum (3) three years of working experience from international organization, government organization or civil society;
  • Experience from working in context of high pace and with short lead times;
  • Ability to take initiative and alternate working independently and working as a member in a team;
  • Strong communication and people skills;
  • Fluent in Thai and English, both written and spoken;
  • Good writing skills and strong attention to detail;
  • Very good organisational, planning and time management skills;
  • Ability to handle personal issues/information and deal with clients in a friendly and sensitive manner;
  • Punctual and responsible; and
  • Proficiency in basic MS Office programs: Word, Outlook, Excel etc.

Fluency in Swedish is considered a strong added value.

Prior work experience with Swedish Governmental Authorities, at a Swedish Embassy or an international organization is considered an added value.
