Sweden provides support for Moldova’s refugee response

03 Mar 2022

In response to the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, and by request from the Moldovan government, Sweden will provide:

- Ten 48 m2 emergency tents
- A large electricity generator
- Lighting, heating systems
- Two emergency response experts who will support the transport, logistics and coordination regarding the donation.

The experts will arrive in Moldova tomorrow, and the equipment next week.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine 24 February, many Ukrainians have been forced to flee their country. The Republic of Moldova and its people have shown tremendous generosity and received more than 100 000 Ukrainian refugees, with more than 50 000 currently staying in the country.

The work done by the Republic of Moldova and Moldovan volunteers is truly impressive. But resources are limited, and Moldova needs support to handle these challenges, says Katarina Fried, Swedish Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova.

This is a step in Sweden’s support to the Republic of Moldova in response crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Sweden has also committed around 58 million Euro in humanitarian response to Ukraine and the region, including Moldova. This is in addition to the flexible funding that Sweden is already giving to the UN system every year, for them to quickly respond to crises where needed.

Sweden continues to be a longstanding partner to the development of Moldova’s democratic and free society, and our already ongoing programmes are continuing.
