Joint Statement on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in the Republic of Moldova* Chisinau, 17 May 2020 –
Everyone - without distinction of any kind - is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including the right to be free from discrimination and the right to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which is celebrated today, we recall the fact that every state has an obligation to promote and protect those human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is the duty of each state to protect all persons, irrespective of sex, sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, from discrimination and violence as well as ensure that all persons enjoy equal opportunities and equal treatment.
As the LGBTI community in Moldova celebrates this day, we support their endeavors to achieve respect for diversity, a value that is fundamental to open democratic societies.
It is unfortunately the case that the current COVID-19 pandemic – and the restrictive measures necessary to mitigate its impact on public health – have exposed some LGBTI people to increased discrimination and even violence at the hands of their fellow citizens. We call on all states to uphold the human rights of every individual in these difficult times.
