Sweden’s support to those affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria

17 Feb 2023

The earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria caused enormous devastation. The Swedish Government and public authorities continue to provide assistance in the affected areas.

Thus far, Sweden has contributed SEK 117 million to support the earthquake-stricken countries. A total of SEK 37 million has been donated in the form of immediate humanitarian support through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. Sweden is also donating an additional SEK 80 million via Sida to UN organisations, the Swedish Red Cross and Islamic Relief Sweden. They are providing fuel, food, accommodation, medical care and ambulances in Syria. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency has organised air transport of medical staff, search and rescue teams, search and rescue dogs and family tents.

Sweden is one of the world’s largest humanitarian donors. We provide generous core funding to both the UN and the IFRC in Syria. This funding is critical to ensuring that humanitarian organisations quickly have the capacity and preparedness to immediately provide assistance without having to wait for needs assessments, emergency appeals or additional donor contributions.
