Nordic Talks Japan: Energy Security as Driver for the Green Transition

08 Dec 2022, 10.00 PM

Nordic Talks Japan is a series of hybrid events to share inspiration on how to take action on sustainability issues in our everyday lives. Speakers with the brightest minds from the Nordics and Japan will be sharing their ideas.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, the subsequent sanctions, and Russia’s limitations on its natural gas exports to Europe have revealed the inherent vulnerabilities of being dependent on importing energy resources like oil, coal, and natural gas. For many countries, among them the Nordics, these developments have given new impetus to the discussion on how to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, both to increase energy security and to ensure an adequate energy supply, in addition to the climate concerns.

Today’s energy market challenges have affected our societies in various ways: the risk of lacking supplies, the volatile prices of fuels and electric power, the difficulties in short-term diversification of supplies, as well as the general economic recession. We have seen plans to remove carbon-emitting energy production being pushed off until later dates and nuclear energy options being put back on the agenda. At the same time, hydrocarbons are
becoming increasingly costly, soon catching up with even the more expensive renewable options.

Please join us on December 8th for an inspiring conversation on how the Nordic countries and Japan can exploit further their renewable energy resources to become more independent while making their energy consumption more sustainable.

This Nordic Talks Japan is jointly hosted by the Royal Danish Embassy in Tokyo, the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo, the Embassy of Iceland in Tokyo, the Embassy of Norway in Tokyo, the Embassy of Finland in Tokyo, The Finnish Institute in Japan, Nordic Innovation House Tokyo, and University of CREATIVITY. The Talk will be held in English with Japanese simultaneous interpretation, recorded, and made publicly available.

Through Nordic Talks Japan, we strive to create a platform for exchange and dialogue toopen doors for even closer social and economic relations to work together towards a sustainable future between the Nordic countries and Japan.
