How do we apply for a passport for our newborn in Hong Kong?

To apply for a passport for a child born abroad, the child must have been assigned a coordination number (samordningsnummer). If you live in Hong Kong, you are welcome to book an appointment for the application of a coordination number at the Consulate General.

You need to bring a filled-out version of the Name application form to the appointment, signed by both legal guardians and the applicant, if she or he is 12 years or older. The child must be present when the application is filed, accompanied by at least one legal guardian. You are also required to bring the following original documents*:

  • Birth certificate of the child
  • Marriage certificate of the legal guardians. If the marriage is registered in Sweden, you can bring an excerpt from the Swedish Tax Agency where this is stated.
  • Passport or valid photo-ID of the legal guardians. If only one legal guardian is present to file the application, they are required to bring the passport or valid photo-ID of the other legal guardian (either the original document or a certified copy).
  • Hospital Maternity records. Bring the Mother Discharge Record and the New Born Discharge Record. Please ensure to also bring the child's "Baby Book".

Documents in languages other than Swedish or English should be translated and certified by notary public.

To book an appointment, please e-mail: generalkonsulat.hongkong@gov.se  or call +852 2521 1212.

Further information regarding coordination number is available at the Swedish Tax Agency's website.

*Note that original documents issued in Hong Kong should have an apostille stamp. You can read more here: Hong Kong Judiciary - Apostille Service.
