Artist: Nils Kreuger (1858-1930)

Nils Kreuger (1858-1930) was a Swedish artist born in Kalmar. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, and in Paris where he later joined the Swedish artists' colonies in Montparnasse and Grez. Back in Sweden, he joined the "Opponents" which included Richard Bergh and Ernst Josephsson. He later co-founded the Varberg School with Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström. Kreuger was inspired by the painting of Paul Gauguin and the Swedish landscape around Varberg.

Under the influence of the French Neo-Impressionists, Kreuger began to paint pointillistically. He painted socially realistic motifs from Paris and its surroundings. After his return to Sweden, Kreuger's colour scale became more subdued, but was broken up by brighter tones during his summer stays on Öland. With sketchpad in hand, he wandered the Alvaret and captured this special landscape with its grazing cows and horses as well as city motifs from Stockholm. Widely represented in Swedish museums and in other Nordic countries.
