Welcome to the Embassy of Sweden in Nicosia, Cyprus
Sweden opened the embassy in Nicosia in 2004, the same year as the Republic of Cyprus entered into the European Union (EU). The embassy is centrally located in the” Severis-building” at 9. Arch. Makarios III Avenue, close to the old city-walls of Nicosia. Seven people in total work at the embassy: three diplomats and four locally employed staff. The embassy is co-located with the embassy of Finland.
The mission of the embassy is to represent Sweden and promote Swedish interest in Cyprus. As members of the EU, Sweden and the Republic of Cyprus have a broad and natural platform for cooperation. Sweden also has a long-standing bilateral commitment in Cyprus, not least pertaining to promoting peace, dialogue and mutual understanding among the peoples of the island. A notable Swedish contribution to the Cyprus peace efforts is the more than 28 000 tours of duty made by Swedes who have served with the UN’s peacekeeping force UNFICYP between 1963 and 1992.
Another important part of the embassy’s work is The Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process, a confidence building initiative focused on human rights and dialogue between the religious leaders of Cyprus. The initiative has facilitated several joint statements by the religious leaders in support of peace and reconciliation. It has also supported confidence building measures between the religious communities, such as improving access to religious sites on both sides of the island.
The embassy is also active in the promotion of trade and culture, as well as consular matters. More than 100 000 Swedes visit Cyprus on an annual basis.
