Today the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai Celebrates an Important Anniversary

The Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai was officially inaugurated on 16 September 1996.

A High-Level ceremony attended by Sweden’s Prime Minister at the time, Göran Persson, then Chinese Minister of Machinery Industry Bao Xuding, as well as former Deputy Mayor of Shanghai Zhao Qizheng, was held on 6 November that same year.

Historically, the Swedish presence in Shanghai is long standing. An honorary Consulate General opened in 1863, working with trade and shipping, and the first permanent Swedish Consul General in Shanghai, Oscar Lagerheim, was appointed in 1884.

During these past 25 years, the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai has had the honor and pleasure to represent Sweden in Shanghai and in the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, promoting exchanges between Sweden and China. Consul-General Marie-Claire Swärd Capra and all members of the Consulate General are looking forward to continuing our work in this dynamic region.
