On Tuesday 16 October just over 40 former students and researcher from Karolinska Institutet (KI) met at the residence of the consul general to celebrate the Shanghai alumni chapter launch. China is KI’s first organized international alumni network and the network is launched on Chinese soil through three events taking place in Beijing, Shanghai and Jinan.
The Chinese alumni have been keeping in touch since 2012 through the media platform WeChat and at that time they were about 20 people. Now they have well surpassed 200 and the number keeps on rising. Compared to other universities the KI alumni are somewhat older in age, since 80 % have at least a PhD or more and the remaining 20 % are master students. Universities and industry are the biggest employers of the alumni, most of whom are stationed around Shanghai and Beijing.
The hopes for the alumni chapter is to strengthen the relationship between China and Sweden and to attract more students and researchers from China to KI.
