On May 9 the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai hosted a diplomatic reception to celebrate Europe Day as part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in Shanghai, together with the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, at the Shanghai Modern Art Museum.
Europe Day celebrates the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, that proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, thereby setting the foundation for the later European Union. This Europe Day we also celebrated the 30 years of the Internal Market which makes the EU the world’s largest single market area.
At the reception, the Consul General of Sweden in Shanghai Ambassador Marie-Claire Swärd Capra delivered opening remarks, followed by remarks by Bettina Schön-Behanzin, Vice President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and Chair of the Shanghai Chapter.
The event was supported by the participation of the Consulates General of Belgium, Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia offering a selection of samples of European delicacies to the 350 guests from the Shanghai diplomatic and business community attending the event. The evening provided an opportunity to celebrate Europe’s achievements, working for peace, a global partner, providing support to Europeans everywhere and to our companies, and creating sustainable growth through competitive business.
