The Consulate General inaugurated the project "Beyond the Norm: Images that Change the World" in Shanghai on September 27. It marks the beginning of a month-long Sino-Swedish photo exhibition interspersed with six pop-up photo booth sessions, a lecture and a film screening.

The project, co-organized by the Consulate General and the Swedish Institute, is intended to challenge and break norms in terms of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and age. Starting with a photo exhibition co-created by the Gender Photographer Tomas Gunnarsson and the city of Gävle, the project was developed by the incorporation of six Chinese interpretations of gender equality to cater to a local audience.
The initial part of the program included the inauguration ceremony, a pop-up photo booth session and a lecture. Consul General Lisette Lindahl, the Gender Photographer Tomas Gunnarsson and the project curator He Yining spoke at the ceremony attended by 60 representatives from media, public organizations and the cultural community in Shanghai. At the photo booth session the Gender Photographer Tomas Gunnarsson took gender-stereotype-challenging photos of over 20 participants. The lecture "Images of men and women in media: how to break gender stereotypes" on September 28 was attended by an audience of over 80 people.
The exhibition, which is open to the public and free of charge, will be on display until October 20 at Taikoo Hui, a centrally located shopping mall in Shanghai.
The project received support from local partners including Profoto, Shanghai International Culture Association, Absolut, H&M, Oatly, Oriflame, Business Ecology, VICE, HKRI Taikoo Hui and Photo Shanghai.
