Last Thursday, Mr. van der Poel gave away the gold medal he received for winning the 10 000 meter speed skating race during the Beijing Olympics. The receiver was the daughter of Gui Minhai.
Mr Gui is a Swedish publisher who is serving a 10-year prison sentence in China. With his gift Mr. van der Poel wants to raise awareness about human rights and freedom of speech.
