Elin Anna Labba, Anders Sparring, and Per Gustavsson will represent Sweden at this year's festival edition.
The Auckland Writers Festival, running from 13 to 18 May, will host over 220 participants from around the world, including three authors/illustrator from Sweden.
Sweden's participation underscores its rich literary talent and commitment to cultural exchange. Festival-goers can expect engaging discussions and captivating stories from these talented Swedish authors.
Elin Anna Labba
Elin Anna Labba, is a Sámi journalist and writer from Sápmi, Sweden. She has previously been the editor of several Sámi magazines and working for the indigenous Sámi Authors’ Centre, with a mission to strengthen and emphasise Sámi literature.
As a writer she has won several prices for the Nonfiction book The rocks will echo our sorrow, a blend of historical reportage, memoir, and lyrical reimagining where Elin Anna Labba travels to the lost homeland of her ancestors to tell of the forced removal of the Sámi in the early twentieth century. Through stories, photographs, letters, and joik lyrics she gathers a chorus echoing the displacements of other Indigenous people around the world as it depicts the singular experience of the Northern Sámi.
Anders Sparring and Per Gustavsson
Swedish author/illustrator duo, Anders Sparring and Per Gustavsson will present their collaborative children's book, "The Pinchers".
Sparring, a well-established writer of TV series and children's novels, is known for his engaging storytelling and humorous approach. During his parent leave, with a baby that slept all the time, he began writing his first children's book, debuting in 2012. A few years later, he met Per Gustavsson on stage while interviewing him during a book-day at Natur & Kultur. In 2017, Anders and Per launched the first book of their Pinchers series.
Gustavsson has been active as an author and illustrator since 1995 when he debuted with the book Stoppa bollen. He has received several prizes and awards such as the Heffaklumpen, Crime time award, the August Prize and the Elsa Beskow Plaque. He has also been nominated for Sweden's most famous literary prize, the August Prize.
