Sweden & Italy

Swedish citizen residing in a third country (other than Sweden or Italy)

The civil status officer, where the marriage or civil union is intended to be celebrated, requires the following documentation:

  1. Certificate of Marriage Capacity “Äktenskapscertifikat”with an EU multilingual standard form attached containing a translation Swedish/Italian (Annex V). Both the Certificate and the translation are issued directly by the Swedish Embassy in the country of residence.

  2. Registry Extract, containing the names of the parents (personbevis med uppgifter om föräldrarnas namn) with an EU multilingual standard form attached containing a translation Swedish/Italian (Annex I). Both the Extract and the translation are issued directly by the Registry Office in Sweden “Skatteverket”.

By selecting the country of residence on the Sweden Abroad website, you can find information regarding the procedure to follow to request a certificate of marriage capacity “Äktenskapscertifikat” through the Swedish Embassy in the country of residence.

According to the EU regulation of February 16, 2019, aimed at simplifying the circulation of certain official documents, Italian Authorities recognize the Certificate of Marriage Capacity and the Registry Extract with attached EU multilingual standard form, even without Apostille. Further information is available in the regulation published in the official journal of the European Union.

In the event that the Embassy in the country of residence is unable to issue the Certificate of Marriage Capacity “Äktenskapscertifikat” with an EU multilingual standard form attached containing a translation Swedish/Italian, the Certificate must be translated into Italian and authenticated with an Apostille stamp by a Notary in Sweden.
