Accept all Only criticalNeither the Embassy nor our Consulates or the Church of Sweden are authorized to perform marriages in Italy.
In Italy, only an Italian civil or ecclesiastical Authority can perform the marriage ceremony. A civil union can only be registered through a civil ceremony. To celebrate a Catholic marriage, at least one of the spouses must be of the Catholic faith. If one or both spouses are not residents of Italy, in order to register the marriage in Italy and subsequently in Sweden, they must first be united in marriage through a civil ceremony.
Before the ceremony, whether civil or religious, it is necessary for the competent Authorities to ascertain that there are no impediments to the marriage or the registration of the civil union. The Swedish Authorities will initiate the procedure only for the Swedish citizen; the foreign (non-Swedish) spouse must inquire with the competent Authority regarding the necessary documentation.
In the menu below, you can find information regarding the procedure for Swedish citizens who wish to get married in Italy:
To register the marriage/civil union in Sweden, you must contact the Swedish registry “Skatteverket” directly. The Embassy does not provide assistance with the registration.
Sweden has diplomatic relations with almost all States in the world. It has embassies and consulates in around half of these. Sweden's foreign representation consists of approximately 100 missions abroad and 350 honorary consulates.
