Emergency Passport in Ireland
In the event of the loss of an ordinary passport, if it is no longer valid, or if the passport has been submitted to a foreign Embassy for visa issuance, it is possible to apply for an emergency passport. The emergency passport is normally issued for direct travel to Sweden or a country of residence and has a short validity period. It can also be issued for travel to a country where there is a Swedish Embassy and where an application for an ordinary passport can be submitted.
You must check whether the country you are visiting accepts a Swedish emergency passport in A4 format. The easiest way to obtain this information is by contacting the respective country’s Embassy or border control.
The Embassy in Dublin is authorised to issue emergency passports.
Please note:
- You cannot apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for the UK on an emergency passport.
- Ordinary passports are blocked when an emergency passport is issued.
- If your previous passport is lost or stolen, you must first report this to the police in Ireland (Gardaí). Then bring the police report in original when you apply for an emergency passport. You should also contact the Swedish police and report your lost passport.
- For a person under 18 years old, the legal guardians' consent is required for the issuance of an emergency passport. The consent form can be obtained and downloaded here. Note that the guardians’ signatures must be witnessed by two people. Attach a certified copy of the guardians’ passports, and the guardians must present valid passports upon application.
- It may take up to 72 hours from the time of application to issue an emergency passport.
- You may have to apply for a new emergency passport for your return trip to Ireland, if you are unable to wait for your new passport in the country where you are applying.
You must be able to present the following when applying:
- Your previous passport.
- If the passport is stolen or lost, bring the police report in original (see above) and another valid photo ID. If you do not have a photo ID, certain individuals can certify your identity. For information on who is eligible to certify your identity, see the police authority's website.
- Completed form "Information for Verification of Swedish Citizenship".
