1: How do I apply for a passport/ID-card?
Appointments for application for passport and national ID-card can only be booked online. Book your appointment here.
The following documents in original are needed when applying for a passport/ID-card for adults:
- Valid passport
- The form "Information for verification of Swedish citizenship"
- Newly issued Austrian "Meldebestätigung" or German "Meldebescheinigung" or other proof of residency in the country you live in
- A birth certificate if you are born outside of Sweden and have never been registered in Sweden
- Foreign passport/ID card - if you have another citizenship than Swedish.
- Certificate of Swedish citizenship if you became Swedish after applying.
In some cases, you also need a certificate that you have retained the Swedish citizenship after your 22nd birthday, or a citizenship declaration from the Swedish Migration Agency
- Check with Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency) that your personal information is correct. Passports and ID-cards will be issued in the name that is registered in the population register. Fill out and bring a printed and signed copy of the form "Ny adress/röstlängd" (only in Swedish)
- In some cases, the embassy may require additional documents to prove your citizenship. What documents are required to prove citizenship differ from case to case and become clear only when the application is started.
The following documents in original are needed when applying for a passport/ID-card for children:
- Valid passport for the child
- Both parents' valid passports
- The forms "Guardian's certificate" and "Information for verification of Swedish citizenship"
- An international birth certificate if the child is born outside of Sweden and has never been registered in Sweden
- Newly issued Austrian "Meldebestätigung" or German "Meldebescheinigung" or other proof of residency in the country the child lives in
- In some cases, the embassy may require additional documents to prove citizenship
- A coordination number (samordningsnummer) must be requested before a passport can be issued for the first time.
Please note that persons with a coordination number (samordningsnummer) must count on a longer processing time (2-4 weeks after application) to get their passport, if the number has been declared dormant by the Swedish Tax Agency. Unfortunately, the embassy has no influence on the processing time. See more information at Skatteverket.se.
