Instructions: Application for minor (under 18)
Carefully read through the following instructions well in advance of the time of application, the application must be complete and ready to be submitted upon arrival to the booked time.
When applying for a Swedish passport/national ID card, a verification of the applicant’s citizenship is carried out, and the applicant is obliged to prove their Swedish citizenship at the time of application. If you apply for a Swedish passport/national ID card abroad for a child, you must always submit a form containing information that forms the basis for the citizenship verification, as well as the supporting documents required in the individual case. Please note that this applies even if the child previously has had a Swedish passport/national ID card.
To apply for a Swedish passport/national ID card in Australia for a minor (child under 18), the following is required*. Please note that all documents must be presented in original.
- A Swedish personal identity number or coordination number.
- A pre-booked appointment. Please arrive no earlier than maximum 15 minutes before the booked time.
- The child's personal presence at the time of application with at least one guardian. The visit takes approximately 15 minutes. Information regarding photo and fingerprints.
- Make sure that personal information in the Swedish Population Register is correct. The name that is registered there is the basis for the issuing of a Swedish passport/national ID card.
- The form "Information for verification of Swedish citizenship" must be clearly completed before arrival. If the child has more than one guardian, they must all sign their name on the form. Minors (children under 18) must not sign their own form.
- The child’s guardians must prove their identity with a valid ID document. If a guardian does not have a valid Swedish ID document, the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra accepts ID documents from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific States**. Any previous expired Swedish passport must be presented. If the child has more than one guardian and only one accompanies the child to the Embassy, the other guardian's ID document must be presented.
- If the child has a previous Swedish passport/national ID card, this must be presented, valid or expired.
- The application fee equivalent to SEK 1,600 is paid in local currency (AUD) at the time of application. Payment at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra can be made by card (VISA/Mastercard), a physical bank card that belongs to you or an accompanying person is required.
- If the new ordinary passport/national ID card is to be forwarded from the Embassy for delivery at one of Sweden's Honorary Consulates, a postage fee is added, which is paid in local currency (AUD) at the time of application.
- If the child's previous Swedish passport/national ID card is lost or stolen, a police report must be made and the police report included. The lost or stolen passport/national ID card is then invalidated by the Embassy.
- If the child only has one guardian, this must be proven with a certificate or legally binding court decision.
- If the child or a guardian has a citizenship other than Swedish, a certificate showing the date on which the foreign citizenship was acquired must be presented.
- If the child or a guardian only has Swedish citizenship, a certificate must be presented proving that the child/guardian has not been granted citizenship in the current country of residence or country of visit abroad. This can usually be proven with evidence of the latest granted visa or residence permit (printed copies are accepted).
- If the child did not acquire Swedish citizenship at birth, a Swedish citizenship certificate must be presented.
- If the child was born outside Sweden, a birth certificate must be presented. In a first-time application, the Swedish Tax Agency's decision document regarding name and coordination number must also be presented.
- If the child's guardian is or was married, a marriage certificate must be presented.
