Maria W Horn zählt zu den Künstlerinnen und Künstlern der 26. Ausgabe des CTM Festivals - Festival for Adventurous Music and Art.
Maria W Horn sculpts sound like clay, balancing spectral precision with emotional gravity. Her compositions, spanning analog synthesizers, pipe organs, string ensembles, and choirs, navigate the interplay of synthetic and acoustic textures. She extends instrumental timbres through a meticulous control of tuning and texture, forging sonic environments that oscillate between delicacy and overwhelming density. Rooted in an obsession with place, Horn excavates the acoustic memories of spaces—buildings, objects, or landscapes—to weave intricate harmonic frameworks. These site-specific imprints serve as the scaffolding for works that unfurl in dynamic layers: fragile intimacies expand into towering sonic architectures, resonating with a weight that is as introspective as it is monumental. Her practice interrogates the boundaries of sound, space, and time, inviting listeners into realms where resonance becomes both a physical and metaphysical force.
Presented at CTM 2025, her work »Lo! The Dim Shadows of the Night« is a piece for vocal duo and electroacoustic sound, in collaboration with MONOM for the large-scale 4DSOUND system, commissioned by STUK - House for Dance, Image & Sound, for Ocean Of Sound 2023. Using a modified form of traditional tonal harmonic language, Maria invokes an uncanny middle ground between the classical western polyphonic vocal tradition and contemporary electronic music. Over a mixture of algorithmically generated synthesis created within the SuperCollider framework, and nighttime recordings of the Night Jar bird made in Skuleskogen in Marias home-region in Västernorrland, Sweden, a text based on fragments from the hymn »Ecce iam noctis« is sung by Ansis Bētiņš and Artūrs Čukurs. Maria will join the ensemble herself, playing spatially processed pitched glasses—a ghostly shade of sonic to accompany the dominant role of the human voices.
